When it's Christmas time in Texas
It's a very special time for me
In Texas we'll be swingin' 'round the Christmas tree
Dancin' to a Christmas melody
When it's Christmas time in Texas
It might look just like a summer day
There may not be snow in San Antonio
But it's a Texas Christmas to me.
Chorus:
When Santa Claus slips over the border
It'll sound a little different when he sings
He'll hear those twin fiddles playin'
Christmas songs with a touch of western swing
There may not be snow in San Antonio
But it's a Texas Christmas to me.
--- Instrumental ---
When it's Christmas time in Texas
I love to hear those Christmas carolers sing
People on the go children's faces all aglow
Wondrin' what Santas going to bring
Grandpa's been chasin' grandma around
Tryin' to catch her 'neath the mistletoe
Everything is right the lone star's shinin' bright
But it's a Texas Christmas to me.
Chorus:
When Santa Claus crosses over the border
It'll sound a little different when he sings
He'll hear those twin fiddles playin'
Christmas songs with a touch of western swing
There may not be snow in San Antonio
But it's a Texas Christmas to me.
And here's wishin' you all a merry Christmas
Merry Christmas from Texas and me...

As public Christmas trees go, the "national" tree on Washington's Ellipse is small, at 43 feet in height. It differs from nearly all of the others, however, in that it is a live tree, planted some years ago to grow into its role. It stands not quite alone at the northern end of the Ellipse, with a forest of small trees spreading out from its base. Each small tree represents a state, US commonwealth or similar entity, including one for the District of Columbia.
Each year, the trees are decorated in the same manner for the Christmas season. In each January, they are stripped for the remainder of the year, looking a bit out of place in the expanse of the Ellipse.
Washington institutions, both public and private, are cavalier about using the term "national," even when they are purely local. This collection of trees, however, is "national" in the sense that it sits on federal government land and is managed by a federal agency, the National Park Service.

I was driving out of Boston on the Jamaica Way this evening and as I drove by Jamaica Pond, I could see all these lights up ahead. As I turned onto the Arbor Way, I saw this unbelievably decorated house. I have it mapped in case anyone else wants to drive by. My first thought was that sandcastlematt must have been involved somehow. Here is a story on the house from the Boston Globe.

TEXAS BOURBON PECAN FRUITCAKE
2 cups whole red candied cherries
2 cups golden seedless raisins
2 cups bourbon
1# butter, room temperature
2 cups granulated sugar
1# box dark brown sugar
8 eggs, separated
5 cups flour, sifted
1# pecan halves (4 cups)
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
Combine cherries, raisins, and bourbon in large bowl. Cover tightly and let stand in refrigerator overnight. Drain fruits, reserving bourbon. Place butter in large bowl and beat until light and fluffy. Add sugars gradually, beating after each addition until thoroughly blended. Add egg yolks and blend well. Stir 1/2 cup flour into pecans, set aside. Sift remaining flour with baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Add 2 cups flour to creamed mixture and mix thoroughly. Add reserved bourbon and remaining flour mixture alternately, beating well after each addition. Beat egg whites until they hold a soft peak and fold them gently into the batter. Add drained fruits and floured nuts to batter, blend thoroughly. Grease and flour 5 loaf pans or 2 small tube pans. Place greased wax paper in bottom of pans. Fill pans to within 1'' from top. Bake in 275 degree oven 2 hours. Cool on rack 3 hours, remove from pans. Wrap in cheesecloth soaked in bourbon; wrap in foil. Let ripen at least 3 weeks.

That's our daughter Jean on the left along with some of her fellow soldiers and co-workers. This is her second Christmas in Iraq and she really misses the family at this time of year, especially her two little girls who are with us. May God bless all our troops who give up so much in the service of our country.
